Stockastica Day 1 Results & more

Posted in Manipal, Techtatva with tags , on October 9, 2008 by neyawn

Stockastica Day 1 was pretty exciting, with a close competition all day long. Though the markets didnt show any spectacular rise, and most stocks ended up losing, participants made upto 5000USD through Intra Day trading.

The winner for Day One is Indranil, who had an impressive net worth of $104549.63. For sometime, Vinit Vishal and Ashu Khemka were also good contenders, though they slipped at the end.

We had to revise our rules of the game and today onwards we will be disallowing mutilple accounts by users. We really did not have issues with 2 or more accounts per user in case a person wants to start afresh, but that led to misuse and spamming. There were at a time around 10 accounts of a certain user and a few more of others which was irksome. We did not have a policy for not letting people have multiple accounts, but did not expect one to sign up with 10 Handles, which appeared as spam on leaderboards, which is when we had to intervene and delete multiple accounts. However we gave participants a benefit by allowing them to retain their most profitable accounts.

Day 2 of Stockastica is ON , and we currently have over 200 unique participants, and the competition is close. Hope you enjoy day 2 of Stockastica!

Have fun!

Posted in Manipal Institute Of Technology, Techtatva, Techtatva07 on October 14, 2007 by desitechie

Neyawn called me the sard with brains, he was atleast right abt the sardar part, but as far as the brains are concerned KUDOS to the all the ppl who cleared the first 10 levels, you are the ones with brains. Coz its always easier to make questions when u have the answers, but answering them is the problem. But now the time has come to unravel the mystery , before vodafone sues me for receiving too many messages or some parents sue me coz of the ill health of their techpron addicted child i shall give you the answers ( 5 at a time) here are the first 5
1.) What you can see you may not need to see What you need to see is what you have to see. – This basically means that the answer lies someplace where one can see it …. on this screen press ctr + A and another line is now visible. “The Reply rEally depends on whAt iS lifted up and what is nOt so start thiNking” – which gives the answer TREASON

2.) hello.mp3 is actually a zip file change its extension to zip and extract it to get a picture . answer – PARLIAMENTARY

3.) Download a free bar code reader and save the bar code pic. Read it using the software and the answer is – GOOGLE

4.) Download the song open it using windows sound recorder play the song after reversing it and you will hear Maeri by – EUPHORIA

5.) Read Between The lines and the answer will be clear – FISSION

A day in the Life of The tEaM

Posted in Techtatva on October 3, 2007 by neyawn

Wake up at 7:55

Reach Collg by 8:00

——————-

Use the 10-10:30 break to do one of the 246 official things for the day

Deal with a computer that hangs on opening more than 2 windows, which happens after you’ve waited for 12 mins and almost fought with two people. They’ll angrily stare at you for causing the computer to restart.

Stupid Computer

Stupid Printer

No Paper

No Ink

Get an original idea, tell the GS about it and get it approved from TS. Then call up P who’ll outright reject it. Call up ID to get a public opinion. Go ahead with the idea. Face consequences.

Complete a million tasks by afternoon.

Cancel a date and attend a board meeting.

Cancel the *pursuit of happiness* trip to heaven and work on the official website.

Stupid emails

Goto bed at 12:00 am, very tired.

Take a call at 12:05 am , and work on something you *almost* forgot all day long. Switch on your computer and Get to work.

Look at the clock – 1:00 am

2:00 am… The I-quit-feeling.

2:15 am Work Work Work

3:00 am….

4:00 am…..

4:15 am……

4:30 am……

zZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZ

7:55 am :Wake up !

10 days to go…..

Recursive Acronyms

Posted in Manipal Institute Of Technology, Techtatva on September 23, 2007 by neyawn

It is believed that only 5 percent of people think recursively, the rest 95 percent have iterative thinking. I am glad I am among the unique 5 percent ones :) . I have always been a recursive thinker. I think and think until I cannot think anymore. I have been thinking for the past three days for drafting an attractive poster for the Adobe Flex Workshop, and today I met rookshop and ID, and made them think about it. I am definitely a recursive thinker, no wonder I am so slow at thinking and I often forget what I was my original thought process, and my brains often crashe like Windows. (for the starters, recursion consumes a LOT of memory)

I have loved Linux and especially Ubuntu also because they have really cool recursive acronyms. ( A couple of hours ago, RDP had chuckled at the very idea of recursive acronyms while the know-it-all-chap ID sat smiling. RDP also happens to be the technical guy of the Board.)Anyway, Two of the most common ones are :

GNU : GNU is Not Unix

WINE :Wine Is Not Emulator

However the distinction of being the first recursive acronym goes to JINI , which stands for Jini Is Not Initials. Whats more, JINI never stood for anything in the first place !

Some companies have also chosen recursive acronyms for their name :

VISA : Visa International Service Association

OIL : Oil India Limited

Isn’t the entire idea fascinating?

Course Correction

Posted in Techtatva, Techtatva07 on September 13, 2007 by inderdeep

Ahem!!! Ahem!!!

Once upon a time there began a blog,

Eulogy to a techfest we hold close to heart

A few posts here and a few posts there

Guileless to some to some, To some repertoire,

But what do I see now; no steer

Hear ye! Hear ye!

O demander of more posts

I call for a correction to the blog’s course

Lets not forget our noble attempt

To bring Techtatva’s backstage before all men

Changes have happened we did not expect

No longer we have the insider’s edge,

We may be the blind leading the blind

But when the kingdom is dark

Follow the blind man’s sight……

From Chaotic Soul to Freshy

Posted in Techtatva, Techtatva07 on September 8, 2007 by neyawn

I have always been a chaotic soul all my life. So when I started blogging here, the Chaotic Soul theme was my first choice. Its tough to impress ID, but then he is very encouraging no matter how much he hates your work.(He has always acted pleased to see me whenever I have bumped into him :) ). On the very first day, after reading my first post, he suggested deploying the second year Einstein to develop a new theme for MY blog, something similar to the original disaster.(I went gaga over it when I first saw it, but the non working buttons kinda piss me off. )Besides a Blog should always feel like a blog, not like a technical website with shiny metal fonts having sharp edges. (A particular Workshop poster I saw today was an artist’s nightmare come true, though some people kinda loved it. I”ll put that up if I can manage a scanned copy of it. You could see it for yourself. No offense, but the over-enthusiastic chap kinda overdid it ).

ID

Posted in Manipal, Manipal Institute Of Technology, Techtatva, Techtatva07 on September 3, 2007 by neyawn

The guy is absolutely smashing. I recall he had organized the code breakers event for Techtatva’06. And Boy! It was class apart from all other events that we had. As far as I can recall, it used classical ciphers to encrypt description about geographical places. The description was in simple English and once you broke the code to extract the description, you were in! You were supposed to locate five places in the world map in this manner, and when you joined the five places on the map by straight lines, it formed a pentagon. The center of the the pentagon was the solution.

The first level was easy, but definitely not substandard. If you shifted each alphabet of the code by 13 places to the right, you could see the code unfold itself. And the key was simple. The code had the word *rot*, which anyone knowing the ‘c’ of ciphers, could guess it was a simple Caesar Cipher. I can not recall the exact code, or I would have shown it to you here.

I have known ID for quite sometime. And I knew that the first level was only a warm up, more of a bait to get people going. I remember remaining awake all night long trying to break through the second level, searching for all sorts of code breaking techniques, but couldn’t make any foray. Ever since, I have been his fan, not just for his brains, but also for his managerial skills and a high fun quotient. Whats more, he has promised to write in here, so you could be reading him soon. He is also the part of the official Techtatva Committee

Its always best to hear it from the horse’s mouth ;)
